Head Start and Early Head Start conduct year-round screenings to promote the health and well being of each child and family in the program. One of the program's goals is to ensure that each Head Start and Early Head Start family has an ongoing source of medical care, also known as a medical home. Should health concerns be identified, staff is committed to supporting families in obtaining necessary services for their child.
For families without a medical home, the program assists them in identifying and enrolling in local sources of medical care, such as AHCCCS and Kids Care , or community-based clinics for those who are not eligible for additional services. The program participates in local health fairs and offers free immunizations through community organizations such as MCCHIP .
Head Start and Early Head Start staff members conduct several health screenings on each child, including vision, hearing, hemoglobin, and height and weight measurements. It is a program requirement that each child has a physical and dental examination and maintains current immunizations while enrolled in the program.
