Community Action Agencies (CAA) were created by the federal government to combat poverty throughout the United States. In Arizona, ten community action agencies were designated to serve specific identified geographic areas. The ten CAA’s within Arizona are either private non-profit or public organizations. The Maricopa County Human Services Department/Community Services Division (MCHSD) is one of the designated CAAs.
CAA’s have a tripartite board with representation from the low-income population as well as from the private and public sectors. Board members aid in the assessment and identification of local needs as well as the causes and conditions of poverty. Ultimately, the goal is to reduce poverty and the conditions that are often associated with it. The tripartite board for the MCHSD Community Services Division CAA is known as the Maricopa County Community Services Commission.
